TMT steel bar prices in Bangalore 2026 comparison

TMT steel bar prices in Bangalore range from Rs 55,000-72,000 per metric tonne in March 2026. JSW Neosteel costs Rs 62,000-68,000/MT, Tata Tiscon costs Rs 65,000-72,000/MT, SAIL TMT costs Rs 58,000-64,000/MT, and Vizag Steel costs Rs 55,000-62,000/MT. Per kg, that's Rs 55-72 depending on the brand and diameter.

Steel is the single largest material cost in any house construction project — typically accounting for 25-30% of the total structural cost. Getting the right brand at the right price can save you lakhs on a residential project. We supply construction materials including TMT steel across Bangalore, and this guide reflects the actual market rates we see in March 2026.

TMT Steel Price List — Bangalore March 2026

Here are the current TMT steel prices in Bangalore for Fe 500D grade (the recommended grade for residential construction). Prices are ex-dealer and include GST.

BrandGradePrice/MT (Rs)Price/Kg (Rs)
JSW NeosteelFe 500DRs 62,000-68,000Rs 62-68
Tata TisconFe 500DRs 65,000-72,000Rs 65-72
SAIL TMTFe 500DRs 58,000-64,000Rs 58-64
Vizag SteelFe 500DRs 55,000-62,000Rs 55-62
KamdhenuFe 500DRs 60,000-66,000Rs 60-66
Jindal PantherFe 500DRs 61,000-67,000Rs 61-67

A few important notes on these prices. First, TMT steel prices fluctuate weekly based on raw material costs and demand. The figures above are accurate as of March 2026 but may vary by Rs 1,000-2,000/MT by the time you read this. Second, prices vary by diameter — smaller bars (8mm, 10mm) are typically Rs 1,000-2,000/MT more expensive than larger bars (16mm, 20mm) because they require more processing. Third, these are dealer rates in Bangalore — prices in rural Karnataka are Rs 1,000-3,000/MT higher due to transportation costs.

TMT Steel Grades Explained

TMT bars come in four standard grades in India. The grade number indicates the minimum yield strength in megapascals (MPa). Here's what each grade means and where it should be used.

Fe 415 — Basic Grade

The oldest and most basic grade with a yield strength of 415 MPa. Fe 415 is highly ductile and easy to bend, making it suitable for small structures, compound walls, and non-critical applications. It's being phased out for residential construction in favour of higher grades. Not recommended for house construction.

Fe 500 — Standard Grade

Fe 500 has a yield strength of 500 MPa and is widely used in residential and commercial construction. It's stronger than Fe 415 and allows engineers to use less steel for the same structural strength, which can reduce the overall steel quantity by 10-15%. A solid choice for houses, but Fe 500D is better.

Fe 500D — Recommended for Houses

Fe 500D is the gold standard for residential construction. The "D" stands for ductility — these bars have higher elongation (minimum 16%) compared to Fe 500 (minimum 12%). This means Fe 500D bars can absorb more energy before breaking, which is critical in earthquake-prone areas. Bangalore falls in Seismic Zone II, and while it's not a high-risk zone, the marginal extra cost of Fe 500D (Rs 500-1,000/MT) is well worth the added safety. This is the grade we recommend for all residential projects.

Fe 550D — High-Strength Grade

Fe 550D has a yield strength of 550 MPa with high ductility. It's used in high-rise buildings, bridges, and infrastructure projects where maximum strength is needed. For typical residential construction (up to G+3 floors), Fe 550D is overkill and more expensive — stick with Fe 500D.

How Much Steel Does Your House Need?

This is the question every homeowner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on the structural design. However, there are reliable rules of thumb that give you a ballpark figure for budgeting purposes.

For a standard residential building in Bangalore (conventional RCC frame structure), the steel consumption is approximately 3.5-4.5 kg per square foot of built-up area. This varies based on the number of floors, soil conditions, span lengths, and the structural engineer's design philosophy. Buildings on soft soil or with larger room spans will use more steel.

House TypeBuilt-Up AreaSteel Required (approx.)Cost at Rs 65/kg
Ground Floor Only1,000 sqft3,500-4,500 kg (3.5-4.5 MT)Rs 2,27,500-2,92,500
G+1 (Two Floors)2,000 sqft7,000-9,000 kg (7-9 MT)Rs 4,55,000-5,85,000
G+2 (Three Floors)3,000 sqft10,500-13,500 kg (10.5-13.5 MT)Rs 6,82,500-8,77,500

These are estimates for budgeting only. Your structural engineer's bar bending schedule (BBS) is the definitive document that specifies the exact quantity, diameter, and length of every bar needed. Always order based on the BBS, not rules of thumb. Also factor in 3-5% cutting and wastage when ordering. TMT Steel Bar Sizes and Uses

TMT bars come in standard diameters from 8mm to 32mm. Here's where each size is typically used in residential construction.

DiameterWeight (kg/metre)Common Use in Houses
8mm0.395Stirrups, rings, slab distribution bars
10mm0.617Slab main bars, light beams, lintel bars
12mm0.888Slab main bars, beam bottom bars, column ties
16mm1.580Column main bars, beam main bars, footing bars
20mm2.469Heavy columns, deep beams, raft foundations
25mm3.858Large footings, pile caps (rarely needed in residential)

For a typical G+1 residential building in Bangalore, you'll primarily need 8mm (for stirrups), 10mm and 12mm (for slabs), and 16mm (for columns and beams). 20mm and 25mm bars are usually only needed for foundations or if the structural design calls for heavier sections. The most commonly ordered combination is a mix of 8mm, 12mm, and 16mm bars.

How to Check TMT Steel Quality

Fake and substandard TMT bars are a serious problem in India. Using low-quality steel in your house construction is dangerous. Here are four checks you should perform before accepting delivery.

1. Rib Pattern Check

Every reputable TMT brand has a unique rib pattern on their bars with the brand name and grade embossed at regular intervals. JSW Neosteel has "JSW" and "NEOSTEEL" embossed, Tata Tiscon has "TATA" markings, and SAIL has "SAIL" stamped. If the bar has no brand markings or the markings are illegible, it's likely a local or unbranded product being sold under a brand name.

2. Bend Test

A genuine TMT bar can be bent to 45 degrees and straightened without cracking. Ask the dealer to demonstrate this with a sample bar. If the bar cracks, breaks, or shows surface flaking when bent, it's either not genuine TMT (it might be CTD — cold twisted deformed — which is an older, inferior technology) or is of very poor quality. This is the simplest and most effective on-site test.

3. ISI Mark Verification

All TMT bars sold in India must carry the ISI mark (IS 1786:2008). Check the test certificate that should accompany every delivery — it must mention the IS standard, grade, chemical composition, and mechanical properties. Genuine brands provide a mill test certificate (MTC) with each lot. You can verify the BIS licence number at the Bureau of Indian Standards website.

4. Weight Per Metre Check

This is the most reliable field test. Measure a 1-metre length of bar and weigh it. The actual weight should be within 5% of the theoretical weight (see the table above). If a 12mm bar weighs significantly less than 0.888 kg/m, the bar is underweight — meaning the actual diameter is less than the stated diameter. This is a common fraud where 11.5mm bars are sold as 12mm, which directly reduces the structural strength of your building.

Tips to Save on Steel Purchase

  • -Buy in bulk: Orders of 5 MT and above typically get Rs 500-1,500/MT discount. For a G+1 house needing 7-9 MT, always negotiate bulk pricing. At VarNa Homes, we offer competitive bulk rates with delivery.
  • -Compare at least 3 dealers: TMT prices vary by Rs 1,000-3,000/MT between dealers in the same area. A quick round of calls can save you Rs 10,000-30,000 on a typical house project.
  • -Buy during off-peak months: Steel prices tend to be lower during April-July when construction activity slows due to monsoon preparation and the wedding season. If you can plan your purchase timing, this can save 3-5%.
  • -Minimise cutting waste: Work with your structural engineer to optimise bar lengths in the BBS. Standard bar lengths are 12 metres — designing spans and column heights that use full bars or half bars minimises offcuts. Cutting waste of 5-8% is normal, but poor planning can push it to 12-15%.
  • -Don't compromise on brand: The cheapest steel is never the best deal. Using a reputable brand (JSW, Tata, SAIL) gives you consistent quality, proper documentation, and peace of mind that your building's structure is sound. The Rs 3,000-5,000/MT you save on an unknown brand isn't worth the risk.
  • -Consider a complete materials package: If you're building a house, buying steel, cement, sand, and other materials from the same dealer often gets you better overall pricing. Check our turnkey project services for bundled material supply.
