Door locks and hardware for Indian homes

Your door lock is literally the last line of defence for your home. Yet most people spend more time choosing their door handle finish than thinking about the lock mechanism. We get it — locks are not glamorous. But after selling thousands of locks at our Annapurneshwari Nagar store, we have seen firsthand what works and what fails. Here is everything you need to know to pick the right lock for every door in your home.

Understanding Lock Types

Before diving into brands and prices, you need to understand the four main types of locks used in Indian homes. Each serves a different purpose, and using the wrong type in the wrong place is a common mistake.

1. Mortise Locks — The Gold Standard for Main Doors

A mortise lock fits into a rectangular pocket (called a mortise) cut into the edge of the door. The lock body sits entirely inside the door, with only the faceplate visible on the edge. This is the most secure type of residential lock because the entire mechanism is protected by the door itself, making it extremely difficult to tamper with from outside.

Mortise locks come in different sizes (6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch body length) and configurations. For the main door, always go for an 8-inch or 10-inch body with a double-turn deadbolt. The deadbolt should extend at least 20mm into the door frame for proper security. Most mortise locks are operated with a lever handle from inside and a key from outside, though some models include a knob or thumb-turn deadbolt on the inside for convenience.

Best for: Main doors, entrance doors, any door where security is the priority.

2. Cylindrical Locks — Easy Install for Interior Doors

Cylindrical locks (also called tubular locks or knob locks) install through a single hole drilled through the door face. They are much quicker to install than mortise locks and are the standard choice for interior doors in most Indian apartments. The locking mechanism is contained in the cylindrical body behind the handle or knob.

These locks provide basic privacy and are fine for bedrooms, bathrooms, and study rooms. However, they are not recommended for main doors or any door facing a common corridor, as they are easier to force open compared to mortise locks. Look for models with a privacy button (for bathrooms) or a key lock (for bedrooms) on the inside.

Best for: Bedrooms, bathrooms, internal room doors.

3. Digital/Smart Locks — The Future is Here

Digital locks have become increasingly popular in Bangalore's tech-savvy homes. They replace (or supplement) the traditional key with fingerprint scanning, PIN codes, RFID cards, or smartphone app control. The convenience of never carrying keys is genuinely life-changing — no more hiding spare keys under doormats or calling a locksmith when you are locked out.

The main concerns people have about digital locks are power failure and hacking. Good digital locks run on 4xAA batteries that last 6-12 months, and they beep for weeks before the battery dies so you get plenty of warning. All reputable brands include a physical backup key for emergencies. As for hacking — the encryption on Samsung and Yale digital locks is bank-grade, so a digital lock is actually harder to break than picking a traditional pin tumbler lock.

Best for: Main doors in apartments and villas, especially for tech-savvy homeowners.

4. Padlocks — For Gates, Shutters, and Storage

Padlocks are portable, removable locks that do not require installation into the door. They are used on gates, shutters, storerooms, and any opening with a hasp-and-staple fitting. For home use, look for hardened shackle padlocks from Godrej or Europa that resist cutting with bolt cutters. Brass padlocks are weather-resistant and ideal for outdoor gates in Bangalore's rainy climate.

Best for: Gates, storerooms, shutter locks, compound doors.

Top Lock Brands: Detailed Comparison

Europa — Best Value for Money

Europa has quickly become one of the most popular lock brands in South India, and we sell more Europa locks than any other brand at VarNa Homes. Their strength is stainless steel construction at prices that compete with brass and iron locks from other brands. The Europa M-Lock series for main doors offers excellent security with a 6-pin cylinder mechanism that is very difficult to pick.

Godrej — The Trusted Legacy Brand

Godrej has been making locks in India since 1897 — that is over 125 years of trust. Their locks are known for robust construction and a service network that reaches every corner of India. The Godrej Ultra series is their premium range with hardened steel bolts and anti-pick, anti-bump cylinder technology. Slightly more expensive than Europa, but you are paying for the brand reputation and after-sales support.

Yale & Samsung — Digital Lock Leaders

If you are considering a digital lock for your main door, Yale and Samsung are the two brands worth looking at. Yale has the pedigree (they invented the pin tumbler lock mechanism back in 1848) and their digital locks combine that mechanical expertise with modern technology. Samsung brings their electronics expertise and smart home integration.

ProductFeaturesPrice Range
Yale YDM 4109 (Fingerprint)Fingerprint + PIN + RFID + KeyRs 18,000-22,000
Yale YDD 424 (Deadbolt)PIN + Bluetooth + KeyRs 15,000-18,000

Samsung SHP-DH538PIN + RFID + KeyRs 20,000-25,000

What to Look for When Buying a Lock

  • Material: Stainless steel (SS 304) is the best for Bangalore's climate — it does not rust even during monsoon. Avoid iron locks for exterior doors; they will corrode within a year or two. Brass is a good middle ground — it develops a patina but does not corrode.
  • Lock cylinder type: Pin tumbler (5 or 6 pins) is the minimum for main doors. Computer key (dimple key) locks offer better security than standard pin tumbler. Disc detainer locks are the most pick-resistant but also the most expensive.
  • Deadbolt throw: The deadbolt should extend at least 20mm into the frame. A “double-turn” deadbolt extends to 40mm and is much harder to force.
  • Number of keys: Most locks come with 3-5 keys. Consider how many family members need keys. Some brands offer additional key copies; others use restricted keyways where only the manufacturer can cut duplicates (better security).
  • Handle compatibility: Make sure the lock body is compatible with the handle set you want. At VarNa Homes, we stock matching handles from Hettich and Ebco that pair with all major lock brands.

Installation Tips

A great lock poorly installed is barely better than a cheap lock. Here are some installation essentials:

  • Hire a qualified carpenter or locksmith — mortise lock installation requires precise chiselling
  • Use the template provided with the lock to mark drill and chisel points
  • Ensure the strike plate is properly recessed into the door frame and secured with long screws (at least 2.5 inches) that anchor into the wall frame, not just the door frame wood
  • For digital locks, check that your door thickness is compatible (most digital locks fit 35-60mm doors)
  • Install a door viewer (peephole) at the same time — it costs just Rs 150-300 and is an essential security feature
  • Add a door chain or night latch as a secondary security layer for the main door

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best door lock brand in India?

Europa and Godrej are the two most trusted door lock brands in India. Europa offers the best value for money with their stainless steel mortise locks starting at Rs 1,200. Godrej is the premium choice with a longer legacy and wider service network. For digital locks, Yale and Samsung are the top choices. The best brand depends on your budget and security requirements.

What is the difference between a mortise lock and a cylindrical lock?

A mortise lock is embedded inside the door with a rectangular body (mortise) that fits into a pocket cut into the door edge. It is more secure and durable, making it ideal for main doors. A cylindrical lock (also called tubular lock) is installed through a hole drilled through the door face and is quicker to install but less secure. Cylindrical locks are suitable for internal rooms like bedrooms and bathrooms.

What is the price range of Europa door locks?

Europa door locks range from Rs 800 to Rs 5,000 depending on the type. Basic mortise locks start at Rs 1,200-1,800. Premium mortise locks with stainless steel body cost Rs 2,000-3,500. Europa cylindrical locks are available from Rs 800-2,000. The Europa M-Lock series for main doors is priced at Rs 2,500-5,000.

Are digital door locks worth it for Indian homes?

Digital door locks are worth considering for main doors if your budget allows Rs 15,000-50,000. They offer keyless entry via fingerprint, PIN code, RFID card, or smartphone app, eliminating the risk of lost keys. Samsung and Yale are the most reliable brands in India. However, they need battery replacement every 6-12 months and may need a backup mechanical key for power failures.

How do I choose the right lock size for my door?

For mortise locks, measure your door thickness (usually 30mm or 35mm for Indian doors) and the backset distance (the distance from the door edge to the centre of the handle hole, typically 45mm or 60mm). For main doors, use an 8-inch or 10-inch mortise lock body. For bedroom doors, a 6-inch or 8-inch body is sufficient. Always check the lock specifications match your door dimensions before purchasing.
